Step Six - The Gearbox

As you know, the removal of the the engine bits is now complete (hurrah!).

And as you'll notice from the video in Step Two - Dismantling you can clearly see the giant hole in the bell housing of the gearbox.

In case you missed it, have a look at the photo below...

The second photo also shows all the cogs and metal shards that came out of the hole in the gearbox. Quite a collection in fact. I assume this was my "Gift with purchase" when I bought the car? :)

This means I'm now on the prowl to find myself a new gearbox for the Tredia.

I've been keeping my eyes on Trademe (New Zealand's equivalent to eBay) for a gearbox that will fit that car and wondering if a Cordia or Galant gearbox would fit ok?

Good news though - I recently visited a Mitsubishi wreckers yard to ask about gearboxes for the Tredia. To my surprise he had a few and was offering $150 each.

Brilliant! I told him that I need one for my electric car conversion and he looked at me sideways. I think he thought I was insane.

I told him "It sounds ridiculous I know but I am serious, I'm converting a car to run on batteries".

He didn't say much and I'm still not sure if he believes me but he'll just have to wait and see the results once it's completed!

Good news! I now have another gearbox at last! I went to a local Mitsubishi wreckers yard and collected a 5 speed gearbox that came out of a Mitsubishi Cordia! Yehaa!

So I got home and gave it a good scrubbing.

In between all of the gearbox chaos we found time to take all the old gas car bits to the refuse centre.
